8-Week Intermediate Wheel Course – Richmond studio, Toronto
Ready to refine your pottery skills and throw with intention? Our 8-week intermediate wheel course in Toronto is designed for potters who can confidently center clay, pull walls, and create basic cylinders, and who want to build on those foundational skills to create larger, more complex, and refined pieces.
Across eight weekly 3-hour sessions, you will work closely with our expert instructors to deepen your technical abilities and creative control. You will focus on throwing taller forms, producing consistent shapes, and integrating advanced handbuilding techniques. You will also explore surface finishing, glaze application, and firing preparation to complete your functional, intentional pieces.
Ideal for:
• Potters who can independently center, pull walls, and throw basic cylinders
• Those ready to increase scale, consistency, and complexity in their work
• Students eager to create with more control, confidence, and creativity
Week by Week Curriculum:
Week 1 – Review and Refine Basics
Perfect your centering, wall pulling, and cylinder throwing. Troubleshoot common issues and set personal goals.
Week 2 – Increasing Scale and Height
Practice throwing taller vessels (8–12 inches) with even wall thickness and structural integrity.
Week 3 – Creating Sets and Matching Forms
Learn to produce multiple pieces that match in size and shape, including mugs, bowls, lidded pieces, and teapots. Techniques include throwing off the hump for sets.
Week 4 – Stacking and Non-Round Forms
Explore throwing multiple stacked pieces, creating non-round forms, and using darts to shape your work without a base.
Week 5 – Review and Reflect
Learn advanced trimming techniques, add different types of feet, and refine stacked or chucked pieces.
Week 6 – Surface Textures and Handbuilding Techniques
Incorporate handbuilt elements for functionality and style. Explore handles, slab spouts, carving, stamping, sgraffito, mishima, and small sculptures to elevate your work.
Week 7 – Glaze Application Basics
Learn controlled glaze application, underglaze decoration, and layering techniques to enhance your pieces.
Week 8 – Firing Preparation and Review
Finalize your pieces, review firing outcomes, and plan your next steps in pottery.
All finished pieces will be bisque fired, coated with a clear glaze, and fired again to ensure they are food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher friendly.
Pro Tip: For the best results, consider taking our 4-week beginner course twice to build strong foundational skills before advancing to this intermediate level.
