What You’ll Learn (Week-by-Week)
Week 1 – Refine the Fundamentals
Build consistency in centering, opening, and pulling.
Learn the structural differences between bowls vs. cylinders, focusing on floor thickness and wall transitions.
Week 2 – Altering Forms on the Wheel
Break out of round shapes with techniques like squaring, ovaling, and faceting while the clay is still soft.
Week 3 – Trimming & Surface Design Techniques
Create clean foot rings through trimming.
Explore sgraffito (carving through slip) and mishima (inlaid slip), plus handle pulling and layered decoration.
Week 4 – Throwing Larger Forms (“Go Big”)
Learn how to center and control 3lb+ clay.
Introduction to multi-part throwing and assembling taller vessels.
Week 5 – Advanced Finishing & Surface Continuity
Refine larger and complex forms through trimming.
Apply surface design techniques across full pieces with consistency.
Week 6 – Advanced Glazing Techniques
Go beyond basic glazing with resist methods, layering, and glaze combinations.
Final review on preparing work for kiln firing with strong, cohesive finishes.

- Expect to get a bit dirty with clay slip, but all materials used will wipe off with water, or come out in the laundry
- The last 20 minutes of the class will be dedicated to clean-up

What to bring
- Please bring an apron and hand towel for you to use during the class.
- Short trimmed nails are ideal for ceramic creativity, but our team is happy to instruct some work-arounds for acrylics.
