This 4-week beginner wheel course offers a hands-on introduction to throwing, trimming, and glazing, designed to build confidence, skill, and a deeper connection to clay.

Get immersed in the world of wheel-thrown ceramics in this 4-week beginner course designed to build confidence, skill, and a deeper connection to the clay.

Whether you’ve never touched a pottery wheel before or you’ve only tried it once or twice, this course will guide you through every step of the process — from throwing and trimming to glazing your finished pieces. Each class is 3 hours long and led by one of our expert instructors, with personalized support tailored to your pace and experience level.

By the end of the course, you’ll have created several small ceramic pieces (think mugs, bowls, or mini vases) that are glazed, fired, and ready to take home — all made by your own two hands.

What You'll Learn Week by Week:

Week 1 – Introduction to the Wheel

• Learn how to properly wedge your clay
• Watch a full wheel throwing demo
• Try your hand at centering, pulling, and shaping basic forms (cups or cylinders)
• Get familiar with the tools and wheel through hands-on practice

Week 2 – Throwing & Technique Refinement

• Build on the basics with continued throwing practice
• Learn how to shape your clay into more defined forms (bowls, taller vessels)
• Focus on improving consistency, height, and wall thickness

Week 3 – Trimming & Handbuilding Add-Ons

• Learn how to trim the bases of your dried pieces using the wheel
• Explore handbuilding techniques to add handles, lids, spouts, or decorative elements
• Refine forms and get your pieces ready for the first firing

Week 4 – Glazing & Underglazing

• Discover surface design using underglaze painting or carving techniques
• Choose from a selection of studio glazes to finish your work
• Learn the basics of glaze application and how different finishes affect the final result

Your finished piece will be bisque fired, coated in a clear glaze, and fired again to make it food and dishwasher safe.

Pro Tip: For the best experience, we recommend taking our 2- or 3-hour Beginner Wheel Class before enrolling in the 4-week course. It’s a great way to build your foundation, gain confidence, and refine your skills before moving on to the 8-week intermediate course.
